The Department of Biomedical Engineering of the college has highly qualified faculty from the disciplines of Engineering, Medical Sciences, Micro Biology, Bio-chemistry and Medical Physics. Two of our faculty are Medical Doctors and
two others have Ph.D in Engineering and Medical Physics respectively. The rest of the faculties have Master’s degree in Engineering. The department has the support of specialty hospitals in and around Chennai to provide in-house
training to our students and staff. The department has excellent laboratory facilities. In addition to the conventional engineering laboratories, the department has laboratories for Bio-medical Instrumentation, Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Pathology. The department is headed by Dr. E. Vasu, Dean who had been a Professor at Regional Engineering College, Calicut and has International teaching and research experience in Universities at Australia and Singapore.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Biomedical Engineering is an eight semester program, integrating the life sciences with electronics and computer engineering. Core subjects are grouped as life science stream, electronic circuit stream, signal conditioning stream, computing stream, instrumentation stream and management stream. Apart from the core subjects, English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Engineering Mechanics are also taught. A two week hospital training is also essential part of the course.
SCOPE OF THE PROGRAMME
The four year multi-disciplinary programme is designed to mould engineers who can serve in health care industry, as well as in companies dealing with medical software. The courses prepares the students to work at the cutting edge of technology and advanced biological sciences. Health care professionals increasingly depend upon technology to confront problems and have to turn to the Biomedical engineers for assistance. Biomedical engineers may become imaging modality or development of new medical prosthetic devices to aid the people with disabilities.
The importance of Bio-Medical Engineers in fast growing health-care industry is now well acknowledged and consequently new career options are available to them in health care industries both nationally and internationally. Many of our first batch students who graduated in 2006 are employed in Hospitals, Bio-medical equipment manufacturing companies, Medical equipment sales and service companies, IT companies and Government departments. In addition some of our graduates are now pursuing their masters degree in places like Australia, Singapore, Germany and USA.
Collaboration(Industrial/Institutional):
The Department is closely working with various Institutions and Industries for the mutual benefit.
