DEPARTMENT OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERING
The department of petroleum engineering, under the headship of Dr.B.Nedumaran has student strength of 180. It also enjoys the presence of knowledge-rich faculty of 12 members (3 – Ph.D., 8 – PG & 1 – UG), specialized in Chemical engineering, Geosciences, Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals, Energy Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering and Management, which is inevitable for educating the students with a subject as multi-disciplinary as petroleum engineering. The expertise of the teaching staff and the adequate staff-student ratio has always been a proven strength to the department’s growth and excellence. Experts from oil companies are regularly consulted at all stages of curriculum design and some of their executives participate as guest lecturers.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
B. Tech (Petroleum Engineering) program curriculum covers both upstream and downstream activities of all disciplines within the field of Petroleum Engineering in the theory and laboratory classes in depth. The courses covered include petroleum geology, geophysics, drilling, formation evaluation, reservoir characterization, well completion and stimulation, well testing, crude processing, production operations and artificial lift, reservoir engineering, supplemental recover, economic evaluation of petroleum projects, fundamental fluid and rock behavior, natural gas engineering, petroleum refining and petrochemicals, transportation of petroleum, environment and safety aspects. The field visits, field training and project work would complete the preparations of the students for a career in the oil industry.
SCOPE OF THE PROGRAMME
The breadth and depth of our program is unique: and is multi disciplinary. The same is designed to prepare each graduate for a successful career with both technical competence and managerial ability. To maintain leadership in current and future technology, decision making and management, the program includes guest lectures by practicing engineers and earth scientists in the field, in addition to field visits and field training. The petroleum and allied industries have lauded the launching of this programme and the popularity of the programme is reflected in the quite a large number of applicants for admissions for the same. A few of our students have been provided scholarship from oil MNC’s for their four years study in our institution and they will be absorbed by the companies on successful completion of their programme.
We expect our graduates in petroleum engineering to enjoy a wide variety of career opportunities in major fully integrated international oil companies, with smaller independent operators and specialized companies that provide services for the oil producing companies or others like consulting firms in oil and gas or the environmental arena. Our students are placed in leading oil companies across the globe.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) with international members recognized the student chapter of SPE in our department during the academic year 2008-2009. Since then the student chapter had active years to follow with round the year events including participation of faculty and students in international conferences like ADIPEC, SPE Indian conference, IPTC and in line with in – chapter and section events like lecturer programs, technical field trips, quiz programs, technical workshop, ambassador lecture programme, environmental protection initiatives, personal development and soft skill.
The students and faculty have made appreciable steps in the raising the standards of academic achievements by publishing papers, participating and winning in technical competitions. The department has also facilitated the students with esteemed foreign and Indian speakers on core petroleum engineering subjects.
